Welcome To Mahiti Trust. A Journey towards Development with Justice

Theory of Change

Vision & Approach

Mahiti Trust envisions a just, equitable, and sustainable rural society where women, smallholder farmers, and underprivileged communities lead empowered, self-reliant lives. Our Theory of Change is grounded in the conviction that systemic change is possible when inequalities are addressed through inclusive access to rights, knowledge, and opportunities. We adopt a participatory, community-led approach that weaves together gender justice, health, natural resource management, sustainable livelihoods, disaster resilience, and social equity to build resilient rural communities across the Bhal region of Gujarat.

Gender Mainstreaming and Women’s Empowerment

At the heart of Mahiti Trust’s work is a commitment to gender equity as a transformative force for sustainable development. We invest in women’s leadership, financial inclusion, and institutional strengthening to enable active participation in economic and social life. Through awareness campaigns, SHGs, FPOs, and cooperatives, we empower women to challenge patriarchal norms, initiate income-generating activities, and become catalysts of grassroots change.

Social Justice and Ending Gender-Based Violence

Mahiti Trust takes a comprehensive, rights-based approach to addressing violence against women—physical, psychological, economic, or systemic. Mahiti Trust engages communities in dismantling patriarchal mindsets and builds support networks for survivors through legal aid, psychosocial counselling, medical assistance, and safe spaces. Our work fosters collective healing, advocacy, and agency among women and girls, enabling them to live lives free from fear and discrimination.

Health, Hygiene, and Sanitation (WASH)

Health is central to dignity and sustainable development. We strengthen grassroots health systems by training local health workers, traditional birth attendants, and WASH committees. Special attention is given to menstrual health, nutrition, clean drinking water, and safe sanitation. Adolescent girls and women are empowered as health educators and change agents, linking community health with gender equality and life skills.

Natural Resource Management (NRM)

Mahiti Trust champions community-led, ecologically sound management of land, water, and biodiversity. From restoring traditional water systems to promoting watershed development and afforestation, our work enhances soil health, climate resilience, and agricultural sustainability. Women play central roles in water user groups and natural resource governance, reinforcing the link between environmental stewardship and social equity.

Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihoods

Mahiti Trust supports a shift toward regenerative and climate-resilient agriculture that prioritizes indigenous knowledge, food sovereignty, and eco-friendly practices. Mahiti Trust facilitates organic farming, collective marketing through FPOs, and fair market access. Our interventions empower women farmers as decision-makers, driving the transition to sustainable rural economies rooted in dignity and ecological justice.

Vocational and Life Skills Training

To address rural unemployment and gender gaps in skills, Mahiti Trust offers vocational training in tailoring, beauty parlour, solar cum electrical technician, accounting, food processing, digital literacy, and more. Coupled with life skills development, our programs build confidence, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial capacity. We connect trainees with markets and microfinance to help launch sustainable livelihoods, especially for rural women and youth.

Disaster Relief and Climate Resilience

Operating in a climate-vulnerable region, Mahiti Trust strengthens disaster preparedness through early warning systems, community-based risk reduction, and participatory planning. The organization restores natural buffers like wetlands and promote climate-adaptive farming. Our inclusive approach ensures the voices and needs of women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities are central to disaster response and recovery.
