About Mahiti Trust’s

A Journey towards Development with Justice

Our Story and Vision

Mahiti Trust Born out of the aspirations of Gujarat’s rural poor in the delicate Bhal region, Mahiti Trust evolved from grassroots initiatives in the 1970s and 80s into a dynamic force for equitable and sustainable development. Formally established in 1994 by local leaders and dedicated professionals—including our guiding Managing Trustee, Ms. Devuben Pandya—our organization believes that authentic development must be rooted in justice. This justice spans the intersecting realities of gender, caste, class, and ecological vulnerability, ensuring that every initiative is designed not only to transform lives but also to empower communities to shape their own future.

What We Do?

Mahiti Trust partners with rural communities across nearly 180+ villages in the districts of Ahmedabad (Dholera, Dhandhuka, Dholka), Botad (Barwala, Ranpur), and Bhavnagar (Bhavnagar, Vallabhipur) in Gujarat to build resilient, inclusive, and self-reliant societies.

Our core areas of work include:

Women’s Empowerment through Microfinance:
Advancing women’s financial independence through savings and credit-based self-help models that promote economic agency and leadership.

Community-Based Institutions:
Building and strengthening village- and area-level organizations to enable grassroots governance and community-led development.

Natural Resource Management:
Promoting sustainable use of water, land, and other natural resources to ensure environmental resilience and improved agricultural outcomes.
