Relief and Rehabilitation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During June 2005, it rained heavily in Gujarat. Within just two days, the state received 70 % of the total annual rainfall. Such unexpected rain created flood situation in almost all the districts in the state. In Bhal region, 48 villages were affected by heavy downpour and 15 villages were inaccessible and severely affected. As the landscape in this region is flat and very near to the sea with several rivers passing through it to meet the Gulf of Cambay, whenever it rains water gets logged and the area becomes like an island.  The flood had adversely effected on cultivable land, seeds, houses and roads. In addition to that problems like non availability of drinking water, shortage of fodder, risk of epidemic and damage to properties aggravated the situation. In only Mingalpur village more than 200 houses collapsed during the flood.

Mahiti had taken initiative of relief and rehabilitation. Mahiti staff in cooperation with other organizations reached the affected villages promptly and distributed more than 600 food packets with support of Action Aid, National Dairy Development Board, and Vivekanand Research & Training Institute. A survey was also carried out to know the extent of damages. In addition, 450 temporary shelters (plastic tents) with support of Oxfam - Community Aid Abroad, Pune were distributed whose houses had collapsed and had no roof on their heads to protect themselves from the rains, so these plastic tents proved very useful to the affected people. Unnati – Organization for Development, Ahmedabad has also supported Mahiti in distribution of house construction material to 250 families.

A joint meeting of all the voluntary organizations and Village Level Institutions active in this area was held in context of flood relief at dhandhuka with leading role of Mahiti. In this meeting,
the Government flood relief work was reviewed. A committee was formed to monitor and facilitate relief operation to the needy villages properly. A joint application was prepared and submitted to the District Collector and Relief Commissioner in regarding flood situation, actions needed to be taken and fill up the gaps in relief work.

Many women of the cooperative had taken credit to purchase seeds. These seeds were either washed away or had got spoiled. These families could not afford to spend for seeds again. In order to help them, Mahiti extended support to 350 affected families so that they could plough seeds again.
