topBhal region being highly saline, its underground saline water and less rainfall drinking water. During 1987 to 1993, Utthan through its project “Mahiti” with the help from CAPART, World Bank, IPCL, GWSSB etc initiated construction of plastic lining ponds in 20 villages. 22 such ponds were constructed. It did address the issue of drinking water to some extent, but the issue still remained. It is during 1996 – 1997, that Mahiti initiated organizing women to take leadership on the issue of drinking water. Village level and area
level convention of women were organized to highlight the issue. During these conventions, government officers and elected members, a model of roof water collection tank, which was accepted by GWSSB. The government announced it as a scheme in which 70 % financial assistance from government and 30 % people’s contribution was worked out. Up till now, Mahiti has constructed 498 roof rain water harvesting tanks in the area.
